Discuss the client's medical history, symptoms, and goals. Perform range of motion and muscle tests.
Develop treatment plans: Propose treatments to address the client's pain or other concerns.
Manipulate muscles and soft tissue: Use hands, fingers, and arms to knead and massage muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Improve range of motion: Use joint mobilization techniques to increase range of motion.
Provide guidance: Offer advice on stretching, strengthening, and relaxation.
Document progress: Keep records of treatments and the client's condition.
Refer clients to other professionals: When needed, refer clients to other health care professionals like chiropractors, physiotherapists, or physicians.
Graduate from an approved massage therapy program
Have a high school diploma or GED
Licensing requirements
Pass a state-issued licensing exam, such as the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx)
Register with the state
Obtain liability insurance
Be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Skill requirements
Have excellent communication skills
Have strong organizational skills
Be able to work flexible hours
Have good physical stamina and strength
Be able to stand for long periods
Have good customer service skills
Be able to handle sensitive client information with discretion
Have empathy and be able to adjust your communication and massage style to accommodate client preferences
